Getting your local business found online.

Local digital marketing is heavily influenced by Google, the world’s largest search engine. The latest data shows that Google accounts for 86.19% of global desktop searches and 94.88% of mobile searches. Read on for 3 tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of Google for your local business.

1) Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free business listing that, when properly optimized, can place your business on the first page of the search engine results

With your Google Business Profile, you should –

  • Be accurate with your company’s name, address and phone number (NAP).
  • Provide additional commercial information (e.g. opening hours, menus, services offered).
  • Upload high-quality images of your company and products.
  • Encourage customers to leave you reviews & ratings
  • Add links to your website and social media accounts.

A Google Business Profile is crucial for local SEO for location-based businesses. Google has 92% of the search engine market share and is actually your largest source of referrals.

2) Google Local Pack

Google Local Pack is a feature in Google Search that displays three local businesses related to a user’s search query along with a map showing their locations. Location-based searches (i.e., queries with “near me” or mentions of a specific town, city or county) on Google show results with the Local Pack.

The best part is that the Local Pack appears on Page 1 of the results, often  before the top search result. You’ll need a Google Business Profile (see above) to appear in the local pack.  Displays the company, its contact information and user reviews (if available).

Regularly upload photos and videos to your Google Business Profile so they can appear in your Google Maps locations. Google likes pages to be updated regularly with new content, so treat these pages the same way you would your website.

3) Local Business Listings

Are there other popular local business directories or listings that people in your area enjoy using?

Most listings are free, so setting up an account for your business should be easy. Having multiple local business listings with consistent, SEO-optimized content can enhance your local SEO efforts by highlighting your service locations on Google and other search engines.

Most importantly, make sure your NAP details (name, address, phone number) are consistent across all local business listings, and that your profile includes your website and social media accounts.
