Sharp Practice / Attempted Fraud Warning

This email has just been received from the Pembroke Dock Chamber of Commerce –

I received a telephone call this morning from a person who introduced himself as John Phillips from the Local Police Initiative.  He claimed to be telephoning me as the only cookshop in the area and the business was to be featured in the local police magazine?!  I questioned this and asked him what division of the police he was from, he then told me that he wasn’t part of the police, but represented and was working with, the local police station furthermore he was producing the magazine as part of the local police initiative.  Ever the cautious one, I then enquired the name of his contact at the local police station for verification, he replied that he would "just go and find that information for me", then he cut off the call abruptly, clearly not relishing the scrutiny.

I have reported this incident to the Police, call reference 040510/163 and I have telephoned the Local Authority to report the matter to Pembrokeshire Trading Standards.

I recall a disreputable organisation called Barrington House Publishing who tried a similar approach over a publication entitled Police Scoot or Police Scoop back in the 1990’s, I anticipate this so-called Local Police Initiative originates from a similar disreputable source.
