It all depends of what sort of printing you want and the number of copies printed. However, generally speaking following holds true –
- Spot colour litho offset printing (one and 2 colour printing) normally takes about a week to produce from proof approval.
- Full colour litho offset printing typically takes about 2 weeks to produce from proof approval.
- Digital printing can be done the same day as proof approval if it is only a short run. However, more complexed or long printing runs will take up to weeks to produce.
However, this is all based upon the time it takes to print the work from the completion and proof approval of the artwork.
Some people provide their own artwork, but this must be in a print ready condition. If it is not in a press ready condition , it will not be able to be printed. Remember, professional litho offset printing machines are large metal manufacturing machine waying tones. These machines are in no way like your office laser printing machines or home inkjet machines. As a result the artwork has to be prepared to a much higher standard using professional software.
Microsoft Word and Publisher are not really intended for it. You need to use programs like Adobe INdesign or Quarkxpress, but they take a great deal of time to master.
