Spot UV varnishing is the process of putting a high gloss varnish onto a printed surface in order to make part of it really stand out. A good example would be a company that spot UV varnish’s its logo or staff photo on the cover of a brochure to give them extra impact.
For best effect it is a good idea to first mat laminate (cover it is an invisible plastic with no lip around the edge) the whole surface. This way when you then apply your spot UV varnish to the brochure it has the biggest possible contrast to the surrounding aria.
The photo shows a presentation folder that we first mat laminated before spot UV varnishing the surface over the logo on the front. This made their logo really stand out when contrasted with the deep mat finish of the surrounding aria.
NB – Your spot UV varnish dose not have to be a gloss. You could use a mat varnish on a high gloss surface to create a strong focal point. However, there are other ways of creating this particular effect without using a mat spot UV varnish.
